As suggested in last night’s Superyacht News Video. We have joined the podcast channel together with our main channel. It just makes more sense now that YouTube has made it easier to have it this way. We will upload all the podcasts original posted on our podcast channel and we will not upload any further podcasts or videos to the old (The Yacht Report Podcast) channel.
Another big mouth Italian ceo
It’s not 8 hours minimum rest in 24, it’s 10 hours. And a minimum of 77 hours in a week according to MLC 2006.
On "should have turned into the wind" – microbursts winds are faster than any ship could turn into. The falling air column hits ground (or sea) and splashes all directions. If Bayesian was near that column, she would be slapped sideways.
That knockdown at 56:00 is scary fast. And there was a smaller vessel just seconds earlier that was slapped flat.
Appreciate this content
The last night of the voyage may mean there was not much provisions to act as ballast. It wouldn't have helped.
Great report!! Thank you for all the detailed information. Looking forward to the Live when they pull out the yacht. Quite story when one listens to the timeline of the events. How unfortunate and sad for Bayesian.
There is a problem with the methodology of the MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency). The provision for yachts of more than 45 metres in length to adopt Large Yacht Code 2 and therefore to have a GX range of less than 90 degrees subject to agreed operational criteria, seems flawed. I wonder if the owners of Bayesian were notified of that when they purchased her. The MCA needs to be investigated. Surely Ron Holland the Naval Architect knew of this in the design process, it should also be investigated.
I appreciate the live feeds. When I have a moment it is intersting to see the operation and follow the gradual process of recovery.
There are a lot of comments about the mast on Bayesian. Some performance sloops have a mast around 1.6 times the length of the boat. A conservatively rigged sloop's mast might be around 1.2 times the boat's length. Most sloops have a mast height around 1.25 to 1.3 times the boat's length which is what the Bayesian's is. In other words, the mast is in proportion to the boat.
We all know the problem. The mast was too long, too heavy, and the keel was retracted. The weather was exceptional so when the vessel heeled to 90 degree angle it took a huge amount of water suddenly through the engine and air vents. The down flooding angle was 43 degrees. The vessel in my opinion was unseaworthy in the conditions at the time.
I have not had internet all week dont raise it till Sunday when back up and running
You’re doing an Excellent job describing the events, I really enjoy your analysis! Keep up the good work!
Thank you! You are doing a great job!
..the owner, Mrs. Becarra.. ?
I wonder if the mast wasn’t so ridiculously long and heavy, if this situation wouldn’t have been completely avoided.
At 30.00 in your account it appears that the crew did everything right but just ran out of time because the weather event, the downburst or whatever, was so overwhelming. If they’d had another 60 seconds even they might have been able to manoeuvre as the Baden Powell did and save themselves from the down-flooding and knock down that ultimately doomed the vessel. It seems that the crew did all they could, and all the more tragic because of that. At the end of the day I believe that it was the extreme weather, the lack of inherent stability, and the down-flooding angles that doomed the Bayesian.
These specific details from lived experience is exceptional.
Your boats didn’t sink…something not right here
Top heavy in a storm
I’m a dumbo on sailing but if the keal was up with that storm no chance ?
I still don't understand why the yacht apparently sank quickly when it was knocked over. Where did the water come in flooding the whole yacht?
The lights are on the forestay, which will be hidden
when the boat turns away from you, behind the
mast.
It's amazing that you have come up with so many
things that are apparently wrong about the different
analyses. Everybody has an interest in not finding
out the truth in this situation.
As far as I am aware there were air pockets, indicated by the autopsies which found that people had died from asphyxiation and not drowning.
