  1. you have my applause, good sir. I haven't caught up with your channel lately. This is a very welcoming take. Thank you

  2. While I understand the need of adjustments due to the medium used, however, changing many aspects of the story since you feel like it is just effing wrong.

It is the main reason why I say the blame for the failure of the War of the Rohirrim movie is mostly in the writing team and studio. I don't go hard on the director, Kenji Kamiyama, and his team since they worked with the material they were given.

I'm not saying that all adaptations be one to one with the source material but if changes are needed due to the differences in medium, do it but not in a way that contradicts the story a lot.

  3. It is interesting to hear the original story. I've somewhat avoided Tolkien because so much of the internet and public reduced him to fantasy ™, and I try to tune out a lot to hear myself think. That said, I enjoy it when you talk about Tolkien because your passion for his works is very sincere. (And sincerity is a rare thing these days.)

As for the movie, it strikes me as Hollywood's fantasy ™ with a bribing of anime ™. I would rather watch something like Ninja Scroll, where the fact it's an anime feels more natural to it. Hell, I would recommend other non-anime East Asian movies like Duel to the Death. I might edit to elaborate more, but I feel there's a 'natural environment' to anime not really addressed, that's a bit why anime ™ feels forced.

  4. War of the Rohirrim was no adaptation. It was a custom retelling of the original appendix legend. And used so much of the movies as they could, to get "fans" attention. Somes lines of dialogue ipsis verbis. They even used the same trope to resolve the battle that they used in the movies, when Gandalf brings Éomer and the exiled riders. (in the books it's Erkenbrand). At least they could come up with some new original idea for breaking the siege using Elm's daughter as the hero. But no, she had to "Gandalf" it… <<Look, look!! Just like in the movies!! Don't you remember? Just like Gandalf did!>>

  5. if they were committed to display the story through the daughter's eyes it would be one of tragedy: she lost her royal father and brothers who each could be the next king, as such her station as the highest lady in Rohan after her mother was taken, her land was overrun and what Wulf has done to her when he conquered Meduseld is anybody's guess – but the producers would not follow the story where is naturally leads to – they have to modernize it

  6. The ROP may have been more overtly subversive than War of the Rohirrim but little of the work of these fanfiction authors has been more offensive than the sheer audacity of the WoR writers for naming the princess of the Rohirrim "Hera". What were they thinking? Choosing a Greek name for Helm Hammerhands own daughter. Tolkien would have gone wild if he knew that his personal stand in for the Anglo-Saxons had non Anglo-Saxon names. Why not Eadwina or Cwenaburg or Wulflaeth or Hrothwyn or Hildeburg if you wanted to keep it closer to Helm Hammerhands own name.
